How to Prepare Your Blastcool Outdoor Fridge for Winter

6th Nov 2026

As the evenings draw in and the garden gets less use, it’s worth giving your Blastcool a little attention before winter sets in. A few simple steps now will protect it through the colder months and have it ready for the first sunny weekend of spring.

Leave it on, not off
It may seem counter-intuitive, but leaving your Blastcool switched on over winter is better for it than turning it off. When it’s running, the compressor compartment stays warm, which keeps moisture away and protects against corrosion. The interior stays dry and the door seal gets gentle warmth too.To save energy, switch to Eco Mode. Press and hold the Eco button on the display until it shows “Eco”. The fridge will then run at a slightly warmer internal temperature and use less power.

Will frost damage it?
No. Every Blastcool is built to withstand temperatures as low as -25°C. That’s why many Norwegians choose Blastcool at their holiday cabins, or hytter.

Can I leave drinks inside?
With the glass door heater on and the fridge running, a mild frost won’t freeze the contents. However, there’s no heating element inside the cabinet, so we always recommend emptying your fridge for the off-season. (iXP1 does not have a glass door and no door heater).

Your winter checklist
1. Empty the fridge completely.
2. Clean and sanitise the interior (see your User Manual).
3. Clean the condenser (see your User Manual).
4. Clean the exterior, including the stainless steel, glass door and door seal (see your User Manual).
5. Switch to Eco Mode.
6. Leave the heated door switch (blue) ON. This keeps the door dry.

Switching it off for winter?
If you’d rather power down completely, the most important thing is to let the interior dry fully after cleaning. Wedge the door open with a soft block between the door and cabinet, and leave it for at least 12 hours. You can then close the door for the off-season.

Ready for spring
Before you power up for the new season, clean and sanitise the interior and door seal again. Then you’re good to go.
